Why does my mouth smell?
The bad smell in the morning is mainly due to the reduced production of saliva (dry mouth or xerostomia), which occurs naturally during sleep. Saliva is necessary to remove food residues from the oral cavity. Xerostomia, combined with blood stagnates during the supine sleeping position, lead to spread of bacteria that already exist in the oral cavity and produce compounds, which are responsible for the bad breath. However, dry mouth can be an accompanying symptom of other diseases such as: a) kidney failure, b) autoimmune disease (eg Sjӧgren syndrome) or be due medication (eg anti-allergic). Snoring and mouth breathing have the effect of drying out the oral cavity more, so the breath smells worse in the morning. -Bad breath can also be linked to dental problems, mainly periodontal diseases (gingivitis, periodontitis) due to the accumulation of bacteria. - Other conditions that may be associated with bad breath are allergies diabetes, liver problems and gastroesophageal reflux.
