What is that?
Inlays and onlays are two types of fixed dental restorations that are intended to address extensive damage of the back teeth cause by caries or fracture. It is the best option when the damage is extended enough so as to not allow a safe application of a classical dental filling. On the other hand, the full coverage of the tooth with a dental crown, requires even further drilling of the already stressed tooth.Procedure
The specialized dentist-prosthodontist follows the same stages for the construction of the inlays/onlays as those for the construction of a crown. An impression of the mouth is taken, which is sent to the dental laboratory for the construction of an all-ceramic material (porcelain) or composite resin restoration. At the next appointment, the inlay / onlay is checked for any imperfections of its application and the color-match with the adjacent natural teeth and finally, it is welded in the mouth with absolute saliva control.
